We take Taco Tuesdays extremely seriously in my household, and it’s rare that a week goes by without my family gathering round the table to enjoy our very own fiesta!

I admit that I love my taco mince with a real kick, but as I’m often cooking for kids and those who enjoy a much milder mouthful, there’s been so many times when I’ve had to find some quick fixes for making taco mince less spicy.

The good news is that if you find yourself in this kind of fiery predicament, you’ve got several easy options to help you to tone down the spice and salvage your dinner so everyone can enjoy it.

How to make taco mince less spicy

In a hurry? Here’s the short answer so you can grab and run…

You can make taco mince less spicy by using a milder seasoning mix. You’ll find these pre-prepared in most supermarkets, or you can make your own and simply ensure that you use less of fiery spices such as cayenne pepper, chilli powder, and paprika.

But what if you only discover your mince is too spicy once it’s cooking?

Don’t worry, it’s not too late!

You can turn the heat down a few notches by adding dairy based toppings (e.g. soured cream), a squeeze of fresh lime juice, fresh tomatoes, or a pinch of sugar.

Read on and learn more about these methods, how to use them, and why they work.

You’ll quickly find the right solution for you if your taco mince is too spicy!

1. Choose a mild seasoning mix

Let’s imagine for a moment that you haven’t begun to make your tacos yet, but you want to make sure they’re super mild.

I highly recommend making your own seasoning at home, because you can control the ingredients you use and make it just right for your personal tastes.

It’s also super easy, and if you have a reasonably well stocked spice rack, you probably have everything you need!

Try this mild taco seasoning mix recipe. It’s perfect for kids, and you’ll be skipping the preservatives that you’ll often find in supermarket versions.

Of course, this advice isn’t helpful if you’ve already made your taco mince and discovered it’s too spicy!

If that’s the case, read on to find out how you can fix it once you’ve started cooking…

2. Choose dairy based toppings

Dairy products contain a protein called casein, and food scientists know that it can be used to break down capsaicin, which is the molecule find in chilli that’s responsible for setting your mouth alight.

In short, you can make your tacos cooler by topping with your favourite dairy items.

Just add a generous dollop of soured cream, or natural yoghurt. Alternatively, you could add plenty of your favourite cheese. The most authentic cheese for tacos is cojita, which is savoury and salty, and can be grated or crumbled.

Though humble cheddar cheese is arguably not a traditional choice, it works just fine if it’s what you happen to have in your fridge!

As a side note, if you want to learn a little more about what’s really authentic and what isn’t, this guide to real Mexican food makes for great reading and explains the difference between traditional tacos and the Americanised Tex Mex varieties that many of us are familiar with.

3. Add a good squeeze of lime juice

Lime is widely used in Mexican cuisine, and it’s added to everything from salads and soups, to stews and even potato chips.

The fruit is readily available in the region, and this is very much reflected in the cuisine.

Adding lime juice to tacos brings vibrance and freshness, and it has the handy added side effect of cooling down tacos that are too spicy.

From a food science point of view, this is because the acidity of the fruit neutralises the alkaline of the capsicum.

Another option here is to make a refreshing lime based drink to enjoy with your tacos.

This limonada recipe is made with limes, sugar syrup, and sparkling water, and it’s absolutely delicious!

On the subject of drinks, you might think it’s a good idea to grab a fruity cocktail or an ice cold beer to help you to handle the spice, but this might not be such a good idea.

Research suggests that it can actually make the burn worse!

4. Add chopped fresh tomatoes

Tomatoes are also an acid, so they have they work to balance out the chilli flavour.

They’re such a quick and easy option though that they deserve a mention of their own.

If you need to fix spicy taco mix, simply chop up some fresh tomatoes. You can add these to the pan whilst cooking, or use them as a topping for your tacos. If you don’t have fresh, you could used tinned instead.

This is also a great way to bulk the meal out a little more without having to add any extra protein, so it’s a savvy way to make your taco filling stretch further.

It’ll also give you an extra serving of veggies, which is always an added bonus, especially if you’re feeding your kids!

5. Add a few pinches of sugar

Adding a little sweetness is another kitchen trick for how to make taco mince less spicy. It absorbs the oil-based capsaicin, providing relief from the heat and making the food more palatable for those who love flavour but like to swerve the spice.

A pinch or two of sugar works wonders, though you can also use a little honey or maple syrup instead, depending on what you have in your pantry.

Be mindful to add just a tiny bit at a time, and taste as you go. You don’t want to end up with overly sweet tacos!

6. Add plenty of fresh and blander toppings to the table

A ridiculously easy option for making taco mince less spicy is to just use a little less of the filling inside your taco shells.

You can still create a satisfying meal by adding plenty of other toppings to balance things out.

Some ideas here include finely sliced lettuce, chopped bell peppers, guacamole or sliced avocado, refried beans, rice, and more of your favourite fresh and crunchy veggies.
