BBQ Chicken Wings
These BBQ chicken wings are the kind of recipe you make when you want something easy but still crave that sticky, saucy payoff! I could seriously eat tray after tray of these and never get bored, and that’s exactly what I did when I was testing this recipe in my kitchen.
The wings get seasoned simply, baked until crisp, then brushed with barbecue sauce and returned to the oven just long enough to caramelize. They’re perfect for game days, parties, or those nights when wings are for dinner and nobody’s mad about it (because I’d never be mad about wings for dinner!).

Ingredients
Note: I’ve included a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post!
-
Chicken wings — Split or whole both work; just make sure they’re patted dry so they roast instead of steam.
-
BBQ sauce — Use your favorite here since it’s the main flavor. A thicker sauce works best for caramelizing.
-
Smoked paprika — Adds subtle smokiness that pairs perfectly with BBQ sauce.
-
Garlic powder — Brings savory flavor without burning in the oven.
-
Black pepper — Adds gentle heat and balance.
-
Chili flakes — Gives the wings a little kick; adjust to taste.
-
Salt — Helps the seasoning really stick to the wings.
-
Onion powder — Rounds out the seasoning blend with mild sweetness.

How To Make BBQ Chicken Wings
- Prepare the Chicken: Place the chicken wings in a large bowl.
- Season the Wings: Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili flakes, salt, and pepper. Toss well so the wings are evenly coated.

- Bake the Wings: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the wings on a baking sheet, making sure they’re spaced apart for even cooking. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and generously brush both sides of each wing with barbecue sauce. Increase the oven temperature to 450°F (230°C), return the wings to the oven, and bake for another 15–20 minutes, until the sauce is caramelized.

- Serve: Remove from the oven and serve immediately while hot.

Recipe Notes
-
Pat the wings dry before seasoning to help them crisp up in the oven.
-
Spacing the wings out on the baking sheet is key for even cooking and browning.
-
Brushing the BBQ sauce on partway through cooking helps it caramelize without burning.
-
If your BBQ sauce is very sweet, keep an eye on the wings during the last few minutes to prevent over-browning.
-
These wings are best served hot, straight from the oven, while the sauce is sticky and glossy!

Variations
-
Extra Saucy Wings: Brush on another layer of BBQ sauce during the last few minutes of baking if you like them sticky.
-
Spicy BBQ Wings: Add more chili flakes or a pinch of cayenne to the seasoning for extra heat.
-
Honey BBQ Wings: Stir a little honey into your BBQ sauce for a sweeter finish.
-
Garlic BBQ Wings: Toss the hot wings with a bit of melted butter and minced garlic right after baking.
-
Boneless Version: Use boneless chicken pieces and adjust the cook time for a quicker, less-messy option.

Serving Ideas
These BBQ chicken wings are made for game days and parties. Pile them onto a platter, add plenty of napkins, and let people dive in.
They’re also an easy win for casual get-togethers when you want something crowd-pleasing without overthinking it.
For a low-effort weeknight dinner, serve them with coleslaw, corn on the cob, or whatever veggie you’ve got on hand.
Extra BBQ sauce on the side is always a good idea, especially for anyone who likes things extra saucy!
