Ingredients
You’ll find a printable recipe card at the end of this post! Don’t skip the next few sections though, where I’m sharing extra hints and tips about making these Christmas cupcakes.
-
Vanilla cake mix – A simple boxed mix keeps this recipe quick and easy, but you can use homemade vanilla cupcakes if you’d rather bake from scratch.
-
Vanilla frosting – Canned frosting works great here, especially since we’re adding coconut “snow” on top. If you prefer homemade buttercream, that’s an easy swap.
-
Green melting wafers – These give you that bright, smooth finish for the trees. Candy melts are the easiest option, but you can also tint white chocolate with green gel food coloring.
-
Pretzel sticks – Two sticks form the trunk of each tree, so make sure you’ve got enough for all your cupcakes.
-
Shredded coconut – Rolled into the frosting, it makes the perfect snowy backdrop for your trees.
-
Mini M&M’s – Colorful “ornaments” that stick perfectly into the melted candy.
-
Edible star sprinkles – The finishing touch that really makes each tree look festive.

How To Make Christmas Tree Cupcakes
-
Prepare the cake batter according to the package directions. Line a muffin pan with cupcake liners, divide the batter evenly, and bake as directed. Let the cupcakes cool completely before decorating.

-
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place two pretzel sticks side by side to make the “trunk” of each tree.
-
Melt the green candy wafers according to package instructions, then transfer to a piping bag or zip-top bag. Pipe the melted candy in a zigzag triangle shape over each pretzel pair, making sure to add extra chocolate where the sticks meet so the trunks stay sturdy.

-
While the candy is still wet, decorate with mini M&M’s and a star sprinkle. Let them set until firm.

-
Frost the cooled cupcakes with vanilla frosting, then dip the tops into shredded coconut to look like snowy ground.

-
Once the pretzel trees are completely set, gently press one into the center of each cupcake.

Recipe Notes & Tips
-
Make sure the candy trees are completely set before you try to move or insert them — they’ll break if they’re still soft.
-
Bake time will vary depending on the cake mix you use, so always double-check the box for exact instructions. If you’d rather go homemade, your favorite vanilla cupcake recipe works just as well.
-
When piping the trees, don’t be afraid to go a little thicker with the candy melts at the “trunk” — it keeps everything sturdier.
-
If your candy melts start to firm up while piping, just pop the bag in the microwave for a few seconds to loosen it back up.
-
Press the pretzel trees gently but firmly into the frosted cupcakes so they stand tall without wobbling.
-
These cupcakes are best enjoyed the day they’re assembled, but you can bake and frost the cupcakes a day ahead and add the trees just before serving.

Variations
-
Different Trees – Swap the zigzag piping for straight lines or swirls to make each tree unique.
-
Snowy Trees – Dust the finished trees with powdered sugar for a snowy, frosted effect.
-
Frosting Swap – Use chocolate frosting instead of vanilla for a “dirt” base instead of snow.
-
Color Play – Tint the melting wafers different shades of green for a more natural forest look, or even use white chocolate for snowy pine trees.
-
Decorations – Instead of M&M’s, use mini gumdrops, pearls, or edible glitter for ornaments.
-
Mini Version – Make smaller cupcakes and use a single pretzel stick with a tiny tree for bite-sized party treats.
Serving Ideas
These cupcakes are as much a decoration as they are a dessert, which makes them perfect for holiday parties and festive gatherings. Set them out on a Christmas dessert table and they’ll double as a centerpiece. Kids especially love them, so they’re a hit for school parties or a fun family baking project in the days leading up to Christmas!
They also make great edible gifts — just box up a few in a festive container and you’ve got a sweet, homemade present. And if you’re hosting Christmas dinner, these cupcakes are the perfect way to end the meal!
