Crockpot Shepherd’s Pie
A good shepherd’s pie should have two things: a rich, savory filling with plenty of gravy, and a thick layer of buttery mashed potatoes that holds its shape when you scoop into it. This slow cooker version delivers exactly that. The filling slowly develops all day while the potatoes are added towards the end, giving you a hearty, reliable family dinner.

Test Kitchen Notes: I tried adding the mashed potatoes at different stages of cooking, and waiting until the final 1½ hours gave the best result. The filling still had plenty of time to develop its rich gravy, while the potatoes stayed fluffy instead of slowly melting into the meat.
I also found it was worth making the mashed potatoes a little firmer than I normally would. They spread much more easily over the filling, held their shape as the pie finished cooking, and made serving much neater.

Ingredients & Process Overview
You’ll need:
- Ground beef (or lamb)
- Onion and garlic
- Frozen mixed vegetables
- Beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown gravy mix, and Italian seasoning for the gravy
- Idaho potatoes and butter for the mashed potato topping
- Salt, black pepper, and fresh parsley to finish
Brown the ground beef with the onion and garlic, then transfer everything to the slow cooker. Add the mixed vegetables and pour over the homemade gravy.
Cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours while the filling develops plenty of flavor. Towards the end of the cooking time, boil and mash the potatoes until smooth and buttery.
Spread the mashed potatoes over the beef filling, return the lid, and let everything cook together for the final 1½ hours before garnishing with parsley and serving.

Recipe Notes & Tips
- Beef or lamb both work: Ground beef is the version I make most often, but ground lamb gives you a more traditional shepherd’s pie. Both cook in exactly the same way.
- Chuck roast is a great alternative: If you’d rather use beef chuck, reduce the broth by 1 cup, sear the meat first, then cook on LOW for about 6 hours before shredding it with two forks.
- Homemade or instant mash: Homemade mashed potatoes give the best texture, but instant mashed potatoes work well if you’re short on time. Just make them a little thicker than the packet instructions suggest.
- Cook on LOW for the best gravy: I don’t recommend using the HIGH setting if you can avoid it. The slower cooking time gives the filling a richer flavor and helps stop the gravy from reducing too much.
- Want a golden topping? Slow cookers don’t brown food, so if you’d like a little color on the potatoes, place an oven-safe crock under the broiler for a few minutes, or use a culinary torch before serving.
Storage & Reheating
Store any leftover shepherd’s pie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheat individual portions in the microwave until piping hot, or warm larger portions in a 325°F (160°C) oven, covered with foil, until heated through. If the mashed potatoes seem a little dry after chilling, add a small knob of butter before reheating.
Shepherd’s pie also freezes well. Cool completely, portion into freezer-safe containers, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Serving Ideas
I usually serve this exactly as it is. It’s already got the meat, vegetables, and potatoes, so there’s not much else to think about.
For bigger family dinners, just bring the slow cooker straight to the table and let everyone dig in. If you want something green alongside it, a bowl of steamed broccoli is about all it needs.
