Ingredients

In the coming sections, I’m going to talk you through the ingredients I’ve chosen and their role in the recipe, plus extra tips, advice, and serving ideas. I know many of you like a recipe card to print out at the home, and you’ll find that at the bottom of this post!

  • Ground beef: The base of the dish that makes it hearty and filling.

  • Salted butter: Adds a little richness and helps build flavor after browning the beef.

  • French onion soup mix: Brings that classic savory, onion-packed flavor with minimal effort.

  • Condensed French onion soup: Deepens the flavor and gives the dish that signature French onion taste.

  • Beef broth: Helps create the sauce and gives everything a rich, savory base.

  • Worcestershire sauce: Adds depth and a slightly tangy, umami flavor.

  • Garlic powder: Boosts the overall savory flavor without overpowering the dish.

  • Egg noodles: Cook right in the sauce and soak up all that flavor as they soften.

  • Provolone cheese: Melts over the top for that classic French onion-style finish.

  • Crispy fried onions: Add a crunchy topping and extra onion flavor to tie everything together.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2–3 days.

To reheat, warm gently on the stove or in the microwave until heated through. If the noodles have absorbed too much liquid, add a splash of beef broth to loosen everything back up and keep it saucy.

Recipe Notes

Let the ground beef sit undisturbed for a minute or two before stirring so it can develop a deeper brown color. That extra bit of caramelization adds a lot of flavor to the whole dish!

Stir the noodles occasionally as they cook so they don’t stick to the bottom of the pan and so they cook evenly while soaking up the broth.

Keep an eye on the liquid as the noodles cook. If it looks like it’s reducing too quickly, you can add a small splash of beef broth to keep everything moving and prevent sticking.

The noodles will continue to absorb liquid as they sit, so if it thickens up more than you’d like, just add a little broth when reheating to loosen it back up.

Layering the cheese over the top and covering the pan helps it melt evenly and gives you that classic French onion-style finish.

This is a very forgiving recipe, so you can adjust the amount of broth slightly depending on how saucy you like your noodles.

How To Serve French Onion Beef & Noodles

This is a pretty hearty dish on its own, so something simple on the side works best!

A crisp green salad with a light vinaigrette is a great way to balance out the richness. You could also do steamed green beans or broccoli if you want to keep it really easy.

If you’re leaning into comfort food, a slice of warm crusty bread or garlic bread is perfect for soaking up the extra sauce.

Leftovers are just as good the next day, so this is a great one to portion out for quick lunches when you want something filling without having to cook again.
