What To Serve With Chicken Kiev: 7 Amazing Sides
Wondering what to serve with chicken kiev?
This retro favourite, consisting of a succulent chicken breast, a satisfyingly crunchy coating, and lashings of absolutely delicious garlicky butter, is something that the whole family will love and ask to have again and again.
Here are the side dishes and accompaniments that you can eat with a chicken kiev…

1. Mixed green salad
A chicken kiev can be fairly rich and filling, so a light and simple side dish is often more than sufficient.
Keep things easy by whipping up a side salad including some of your favourite veggies.
Mixed green lettuce leaves, cucumber, tomato, carrot, cabbage, and celery all work really well, particularly during the warmer summer months.
A squeeze of fresh lemon makes for a good dressing, and will ensure that you’re allowing the garlic butter to be the real star of the show.

2. Mashed potatoes
If you love a comforting carbohydrate based side dish, you can’t go far wrong when you choose mashed potatoes for what to serve with chicken kiev.
The garlic butter will melt into the piping hot potatoes, creating the ultimate in satisfying home cooked food!
I like to use Maris Piper potatoes for mash as they tend to create a light and fluffy bite, and you can choose to add a swirl of fresh cream.
Sprinkle over some freshly chopped chives for presentation purposes, or your favourite go-to herbs.

3. Homemade chips
Chicken kiev and chips is a classic combination that you’ll often see on the menu of traditional country pubs.
The key here is to ensure your chips are crunchy and golden on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and served with plenty of salt and vinegar!

These are best when made in an air fryer, though they can also be baked in the oven.

4. Roasted vegetables
A tray of roasted veggies works so well with almost every chicken dish you can think of.
It also ensures that you’re serving up a decent amount of vitamins and minerals, and there are plenty of ways to shake things up a little so you can serve with side dish every week without it ever becoming boring.
Firstly, try using different vegetables.
Sweet potatoes, red onions, beetroot, and carrots are my personal favourite, and the flavours are sweet and autumnal.
If you want to go for a more of a Mediterranean, summer inspired theme, choose veggies such as courgettes, peppers, and cherry tomatoes.
You can also keep things in interesting by using different herbs and flavourings during the cooking process.
From a chunk of fresh lemon and a few whole cloves of garlic, to a combination of options from your dried spices rack, there’s lots of scope for trying new things.

5. Steamed broccoli
Steamed broccoli takes hardly any time at all to prepare, but can make for a sophisticated side dish that wouldn’t be out of place at a dinner party or as part of a feast for a special occasion.
Purple sprouting broccoli is easy to grow in your own back garden, and can typically be harvested nine months of the year.
You’ll have to keep your eyes open for slugs and snails, but there’s something that’s so rewarding about being able to grow the key ingredients for your meals.
When you’re considering what to serve with chicken kiev, broccoli is a no-fuss side dish that everyone will enjoy.

6. Fluffy white rice
Chicken, garlic butter, and a fluffy mountain of white rice is such a pleasing combination of tastes and textures.
If you want to ensure that you add some vegetables (and some colour) to your plate, chop up a red pepper and a carrot into small chunks, and gently fry in a little olive oil for 5 minutes, or until softened.
Next, add your cooked white rice and stir though.
This is a wonderful way to encourage your family to try more vegetables!

7. Your favourite pasta shapes
A serving of pasta is a quick and tasty side dish to serve with chicken kiev.
You already have the garlic butter element on your plate, so avoid adding any fussy or complicated sauces.
The butter should melt out from the sliced kiev and provide just enough flavour and moisture to bring the pasta to life.
If you’re trying to be more health conscious, consider trying wholewheat pasta.
It has a high fibre content which will keep you feeling fuller for longer, and it supports good digestive health.
You can find wholewheat options in all supermarkets, and it’s just as easy to prepare.
Be sure to read the packet instructions, as it’ll sometimes take a little longer than white pasta to cook.

Some final thoughts on what to serve with chicken kiev
Simple side dishes tend to work best with a chicken kiev, as they allow the star of the show to grab all the attention.
Selecting just a few options from this list – such as a side salad and a portion of homemade chips – will make for a delicious meal that doesn’t require you spending hours and hours in the kitchen.
When it comes to the best side dishes for chicken kievs, avoid anything in a sauce, so it doesn’t clash with that beautiful garlic butter.
