What To Serve With Mince & Tatties
Not quite sure what to serve with mince and tatties?
If so, you’ve come to the right place!
Mince and tatties is a traditional Scottish dish with minced beef served in a rich gravy, accompanied by fluffy mashed potatoes.
Though you could say that it’s a satisfying meal in its own right, you might decide that you want to add a little extra to your plate to add some colour and make it extra special.
Let’s have a look at the side dishes and accompaniments that you can choose from…

1. Carrots and parsnips
Carrots and parsnips add a splash of colour to your mince and tatties, and of course they’re also packed with goodness.
You can boil or steam, if you prefer, though I personally like to roast them in the oven with a little honey and plenty of freshly ground black pepper.
To ensure they don’t burn, make sure you parboil them first, then roast until soft and just starting to brown. Stir in the honey and grind over the pepper, and roast for a further five minutes.

2. Broccoli
Get a decent serving of greens by choosing broccoli when it comes to what to serve with mince and tatties!
Boil or steam, and be careful not to overlook.
Serving broccoli al dente with preserve many of those important vitamins and minerals, and ensure you have a satisfying crunch.

3. Bread and butter
This one might be a little controversial, but I really believe you can’t beat a chunk of freshly baked bread with a generous spread of butter with your mince and tatties!
It’s perfect for mopping up those gravy juices, and will ensure that you’re left feeling full.
If you have time, it’s worth making your own loaf for the best results. Alternatively, pick up a part baked option at the supermarket. Then you’ll just have to bake in the oven for around 10 minutes, and have warm bread ready and waiting for you.

4. Rough puff pastry
I love a savoury mince pie, but too much pastry can often prove to be a little too rich and heavy.
Strike a happy medium balance by making rough puff pastry lids by cutting out triangles or rectangles, and baking until cooked.
Once your mince and tatties are ready, simply pop the pastry lid on top.
This adds a gastro pub feel to your meal, and makes it more suitable for a special occasion or just a winter warmer meal for your loved ones.
If you really want to get fancy, you could even use a cutter to create heart or star shaped pastry bites!

5. HP Sauce
So many swear by a dollop of good old fashioned HP sauce with their mince and tatties.
It’s a fruity, tart, and peppery, and is hugely popular in the UK.
If you can’t get hold of a bottle, this homemade brown sauce recipe is a good alternative and can be made within an hour.

6. Green beans
Did you know that green beans are rich in vitamin B and K, and also have a decent serving of folates and calcium.
They may be a little underrated, but they’re a real super food and also a great accompaniment to mince and tatties.
Keep things simply by gently steaming or boiling them. Similar to broccoli, you’ll want to retain that crunch.

7. Brussel sprouts
Though some people associate them with the festive season, Brussel sprouts can be delicious at any time of the year, and make a great side dish for mince and tatties.
They’re an another option that offer a whole host of health benefits, due to being high in fibre, nutrients, and antioxidants.
You can add some little extras to make your Brussels really sing if you like, such as garlic, balsamic vinegar, and even bacon.
