What To Serve With Vodka Pasta (18 Best Sides!)

Spicy vodka pasta is a dish that’s been around for decades, though thanks to supermodel Gigi Hadid sharing her version on TikTok (which of course went viral), it’s enjoyed a huge surge in popularity over the past few years.

Made with tomato paste, vodka, heavy cream, chilli flakes, parmesan, and your favourite pasta shapes, it’s a bold and flavoursome dish that can be put together in 30 minutes or less, making it a fantastic midweek choice to serve the family.

What I love most about this meal is that it’s so easily customisable to suit your own tastes.

I like an extra kick of spice so I’m very generous with the chilli flakes, but if you like less spice, extra cream, and more cheese (who doesn’t love more cheese in any situation?) then go right ahead.

If you’re concerned about the potential alcohol content of the dish, you needn’t be.

The vodka is there to create a cohesive texture which will help the sauce cling perfectly to the pasta, it burns off during the cooking process, and your meal won’t end up tasting like booze!

But what about the side dishes?

In this guide, I’m going to walk you right through the best pairings and accompaniments for this delicious dish.

Just here for the quick answer?

Not a problem!

Some of the best choices for what to serve with vodka pasta include garlic bread, mixed salad, Caprese salad, garlic prawns, bruschetta, stuffed mushrooms, and steamed green beans.

When you’re enjoying vodka pasta, certain side dishes can elevate your meal.

These classics cater to a range of tastes and complement the creamy richness of the pasta.

Garlic Bread

Pair your vodka pasta with garlic bread for a delightful contrast of textures.

The crisp exterior and soft centre provide a satisfying crunch and a lovely vessel for mopping up any excess sauce.

  • Recipe Tip: Try sourdough or ciabatta bread, rubbed with garlic-infused olive oil, and a sprinkle of parsley before toasting.

Mixed Salad

A mixed salad adds freshness and a crisp bite to your meal, balancing the creamy texture of the pasta.

Incorporating a variety of greens, some cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, and a light vinaigrette makes for a perfect side.

  • Dressing Idea: Whisk together olive oil, white wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, and a pinch of salt and pepper to dress your salad.

Bruschetta

A classic Italian bruschetta is always a good idea for serving with any pasta dish!

Keep it simple yet delicious by using the best quality tomatoes you can find, and plenty of freshly grated garlic.

Stuffed Mushrooms

Stuffed mushrooms can be served as a starter or a side dish for vodka pasta, and you can customise the fillings based on your own personal preferences.

I like to use a blend of my favourite cheeses, crunchy breadcrumbs, and a sprinkling of fresh chopped herbs.

Olives and almonds

Just want something super simple?

A bowl of olives and almonds makes a fuss-free choice that’s ideal for serving with a glass of wine before your main course.

Meat-Based Side Dishes

Pairing your vodka pasta with meat-based side dishes can introduce a satisfying protein component to your meal.

Grilled Chicken Strips

For a lean and flavourful option, consider grilled chicken strips.

Season your chicken with herbs such as rosemary or thyme, and a dash of salt and pepper before grilling.

Serve them on a separate platter for an attractive presentation.

Italian Sausages

Italian sausages are another hearty choice that pairs beautifully with the creamy texture of vodka pasta.

Fry or grill the sausages until they are golden brown and slice them into bite-sized rounds.

This rich and savoury addition complements the tangy taste of the pasta sauce.

Vegetarian Options

Choosing vegetarian options to complement your vodka pasta can elevate your meal with a balance of textures and flavours, ensuring a satisfying dining experience.

Roasted Vegetables

Roasted vegetables are a hearty accompaniment to vodka pasta.

Arrange a selection of seasonal vegetables such as aubergines, courgettes, and peppers on a baking sheet.

Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt, and roast until tender and slightly caramelised.

This method enhances their natural sweetness, offering a delightful contrast to the creamy pasta.

Caprese Salad

A Caprese salad is a fresh and simple side dish that pairs beautifully with the rich and creamy character of vodka pasta.

Alternate slices of ripe tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, and adorn with basil leaves.

For a final touch, drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic glaze.

The salad’s juicy freshness will provide a light counterpoint to your pasta.

Courgette fries

Veggies, but make them fun!

Courgette fried in a light tempura batter has a beautifully crisp texture and is a fantastic way to get an extra portion of greens in your diet in a more exciting way.

Seafood Enhancements

Elevate your vodka pasta with sumptuous seafood pairings known for their ability to compliment the creamy tomato goodness.

Garlic Prawns

You can amplify the flavours of your vodka pasta with garlic prawns.

This dish requires fresh prawns, minced garlic, olive oil, and a sprinkle of parsley.

  1. Prepare prawns by deveining and removing the shell while leaving the tail intact.
  2. Sauté minced garlic in olive oil until fragrant, then add the prawns.
  3. Cook until prawns turn pink and are cooked through, typically 3–4 minutes.
  4. Finish with a dash of salt, freshly cracked black pepper, and a sprinkle of chopped parsley.

Serve immediately on top of the pasta for a flavourful addition.

Seared Scallops

For an elegant touch, seared scallops are a perfect choice to accompany your vodka pasta.

Perfect for date night or a special occasion!

  • Choose large, fresh scallops for the best taste and texture.
  • Pat dry and season with salt and pepper before cooking to ensure a perfect sear.
  • Heat a pan with a small amount of oil until it’s nearly smoking.
  • Sear scallops for about 1–2 minutes on each side, until they have a golden crust.

Arrange the scallops over the pasta for a visually appealing and tasteful delight.

Cheese Pairings

When pairing cheese with vodka pasta, you’ll want cheeses that complement the creamy tomato sauce without overwhelming its flavours.

Parmesan Shavings

You may garnish your vodka pasta with parmesan shavings for a delightful texture contrast.

This hard, granular cheese offers a nutty and savoury boost to the dish.

Add thin shavings atop the pasta right before serving, allowing them to gently melt into the warm sauce.

Burrata Dollops

Another excellent cheese to pair with vodka pasta is burrata.

Its creaminess echoes the velvety sauce, while its milky freshness provides a subtle counterpoint.

Add small dollops of burrata on your pasta, and allow them to spread slightly as they meld with the warm sauce and pasta strands.

Finishing Touches

To elevate your vodka pasta, consider adding a sprinkle of chilli flakes for heat or some fresh herbs for brightness.

Chilli Flakes

For a bit of warmth and depth, chilli flakes are an excellent choice.

Use sparingly to avoid overpowering the dish:

  • Mild Heat: A pinch (about 1/4 teaspoon)
  • Medium Heat: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Fiery: 1 teaspoon or more, to taste

Remember, the heat from chilli flakes can intensify over time.

Fresh Herbs

Fresh herbs add a flash of colour and a burst of flavour.

Here’s how to incorporate them:

  • Basil: Tear leaves gently and scatter them over the pasta.
  • Parsley: Finely chop and mix into the sauce or sprinkle on top.

Fresh herbs should be added just before serving to maintain their vibrant colour and aroma.
