What To Serve With Fajitas: 17 Mouth-Watering Sides
Fajitas are one of most popular Mexican dishes available, and that’s hardly surprising.
Not only are they easy to make, they’re loaded with vibrant flavours and textures, and a soft, warm tortilla wrap stuffed with chicken or beef, mushrooms, crunchy peppers and onions, and a blend of spices is always a satisfying and filling meal.
Thanks to the DIY nature of assembling them, they’re also a load of fun when you make them for the whole family or dinner guests.
If you’re not sure what to serve with fajitas, there’s 17 different options here for you to choose from, including side dishes, accompaniments, sauces, and salads.
Let’s take a look…
1. Homemade guacamole
Guacamole is surely everyone’s favourite Mexican side dish, and it’s extremely deserving of a place at any fajita based feast!
Making your own is always so much better than any supermarket version you might find.
It’s also ridiculously easy, and you don’t need a complicated recipe to follow.
The first step is to make sure that your avocados are suitably ripe.
This is absolutely key to a beautiful guacamole.
They should feel soft to the touch, but not too mushy.
Chop them up, and add lime juice, red onion, coriander, and fresh chilli, before gently mashing with a fork.
A simple side dish for fajitas, but creamy, healthy, and inviting.

2. Spicy tomato salsa
Do you love a real spicy kick?
If so, a salsa will give your fajitas that extra edge!
Again, there are plenty of pre-packaged jars and sachets that you can pick up in supermarkets, but making your own is always the best idea.
You’ll need tomatoes, onion, coriander, chilli, lime, and a good dash of Tabasco sauce.

3. Mango & coriander salsa
The creaminess of mangoes lend themselves to making a super juicy salsa that’s an ideal side dish for fajitas.
I love this fresh mango salsa recipe, and I often serve it with a variety of grilled chicken recipes.
If you’re uncertain about mixing sweet and savoury, I urge you to give it a try anyway.
The sweetness of the fruit provides a delicious contrast to the chilli you’re likely using in your fajitas!

4. Halloumi
Fajitas are served in a tortilla wrap, so you might not want to go overboard with extra carbohydrate based side dishes.
If that’s the case, halloumi is a lovely option.
It’s best simply grilled, with a little seasoning.

5. Corn on the cob
Grilled corn on the cob is a popular Mexican street food dish, and it’s also a delectable choice for what to serve with fajitas.
As you can easily eat it with your hands, it’s in the fajita spirit of everyone getting stuck into their meal with gusto!

6. Rice
Rice is a common filling for a burrito, so why shouldn’t it be a side dish for fajitas?
You can serve a plain variety, or throw in extra vegetables for more crunch.

7. Refried beans
Refried beans are a popular fajita side dish.
Contrary to popular belief, their name doesn’t mean that they’ve been cooked twice.
The description comes from the Spanish name for the dish—frijoles refritos. In Spanish ‘refritos’ means ‘well fried’.

8. Homemade tortilla wraps
Store-bought tortilla wraps usually do the job just fine, but if you really want to impress your dinner guests, why not try making your own?
It’s easier than you might think, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that didn’t cut any corners!
Plus, is there anything more comforting than homemade bread, in any shape or form?
These two-ingredient tortillas require just yoghurt and plain flour. (I also use this recipe as a pizza base, and it’s a total game changer!)

9. Fries
There’s no shame in loving an extra serving of carbs!
Stuff them inside your fajitas, or place in a bowl as an accompaniment.
My homemade chips recipe can easily be adapted to fries by just slicing your potatoes thinner.

10. Sour cream
If half your family love their fajitas extra spicy, but the other half prefer things a little milder, sour cream is a good choice so you can offer the best of both worlds and cool things down.
11. Fresh coriander
Coriander is a great source of nutrients, and adding some to your fajitas will add a refreshing, citrus flavour to your fajitas.
You can just chop up some fresh leaves and use as a garnish, though it can also be added to any salsas, salads, or guacamoles that you might be making.

12. Lime wedges
When you’re serving fajitas, make sure that you have a side plate of fresh lime wedges on the table.
A quick squeeze will add a fresh, vibrant twist to your wraps.
It’s also worth noting here that if you’re in the party made, margaritas are an excellent drink to serve up with your fajitas!

13. Baked potatoes
Had fajitas a lot recently, and need to change things up a little bit?
Instead of wraps, serve your fajita mix on top of a fluffy jacket potato.
This is also a good way to use up any leftovers you might have the next day.

14. Sweet potato wedges
The creamy texture of sweet potatoes make them the ideal pairing for a spicy fajita.
You can bake yours in the oven with a little oil and seasoning, or you can add extra flavouring like fresh chopped garlic or paprika.

15. Grated cheese
Freshly grated cheddar is what you’ll usually find served with fajitas in Mexican restaurants, and it’s almost definitely the best option here.
Of course though, there are no rules.
Other choices include manchego and Colby Jack.

16. Garlic bread
Okay, so this one is definitely not the most typically Mexican option when it comes to what to serve with fajitas, but garlic bread is one of those foods that almost everyone seems to enjoy, and it can lend itself to being served alongside pretty much every meal you can think of.
You could use garlic flatbreads instead of tortillas to wrap up your fajitas, or just offer up some garlic baguette slices as a side dish for everyone to help themselves.

17. Salad
Fajitas are already loaded with peppers and onions, and you might have even thrown some mushrooms and courgettes into the mix.
There’s no reason though why you can’t serve up a side salad too, and boost your veggie intake for the day.
Shredded lettuce is brilliant for adding fresh crunch. Add some tomatoes, cucumber, and red onion too.
