Apple Pie Dip

I love all the flavors of apple pie but I don’t always feel like making it from scratch, and that’s exactly how I came up with the idea for today’s recipe! This apple pie dip is officially my new favorite shortcut dessert, and it’s just perfect for this time of the year. It’ll see you right through fall and it’s a great option for Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings! It’s got tender cinnamon-spiced apples, a rich, buttery sweetness, and a creamy vanilla base — all layered together into a dessert that’s made for dipping, sharing, and showing off at parties.

It’s the perfect make-ahead sweet for holiday gatherings, fall potlucks, or cozy movie nights. The apples simmer into a glossy pie filling on the stove while the cream cheese layer comes together in minutes.

Why you’ll love this recipe:

  • No baking required (a total win for busy holiday prep!)

  • Ready in about 30 minutes

  • A perfect dip for parties, potlucks, or fall desserts

  • Sweet, creamy, and cozy — tastes just like apple pie in a bowl

  • Customizable with your favorite dippers (like cookies, pretzels, or fruit)

I know many readers prefer a printable recipe card so they can easily find their favorite recipes again later. You’ll find one at the bottom of this post! Don’t skip the next few sections though, where I’m explaining more about the ingredients, the process, and sharing photos to help guide you through the steps.

  • Granny Smith apples – Tart, crisp, and perfect for balancing the sweetness of the dip. You can also use Honeycrisp or Fuji if you prefer a sweeter flavor.

  • Lemon juice – Keeps the apples from browning and adds a little brightness to the filling.

  • Brown sugar – Brings that deep caramel-like sweetness you expect in an apple pie.

  • Cinnamon – The cozy fall spice that ties everything together — feel free to add a pinch of nutmeg or allspice if you love extra warmth.

  • Water – Helps the apples soften and cook down into that gooey, pie-like texture.

  • Cornstarch – The thickener that turns the liquid into that glossy, luscious sauce that clings to every bite.

  • Cream cheese – The creamy base for the dip — rich, tangy, and the perfect contrast to the sweet apples.

  • Cool Whip – Makes the cream cheese layer extra fluffy and light. You can also use homemade whipped cream if you want to skip the store-bought kind.

  • Confectioners’ sugar – Sweetens and smooths the cream cheese layer without any graininess.

  • Vanilla extract – Adds warmth and depth to the creamy base — don’t skip it!

How To Make Apple Pie Dip

  • Make the apple pie filling: In a large bowl, toss the apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, and cinnamon until everything’s nicely coated. Heat a large pan over medium-high heat and add the apple mixture along with a splash of water. Stir, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer uncovered for about 10 minutes, until the apples are soft. Scoop out a few tablespoons of the liquid from the pan and mix it with the cornstarch until smooth. Pour that mixture back in and cook for another 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and turns glossy. Remove from the heat and let it cool completely.

Storage & Make-Ahead Tips

You can absolutely make this dip ahead of time. In fact, it tastes even better once the flavors have had a chance to mingle!

  • To make ahead: Prepare both layers separately, then assemble right before serving so the apple topping stays glossy and fresh.

  • To store: Cover tightly and refrigerate for up to 3 days.

  • To serve: If chilled, let it sit at room temperature for about 15–20 minutes before serving so the cream cheese layer softens a bit.

I don’t recommend freezing this one, as the texture of the apples and cream cheese won’t hold up well.

Recipe Notes & Tips

  • Apple options: Granny Smiths are my go-to for that sweet-tart balance, but you can mix varieties for more depth — try half Granny Smith, half Honeycrisp or Gala.

  • Texture preference: Like your apples super soft and saucy? Simmer a few extra minutes. Want them a bit firmer? Pull them off the heat sooner.

  • Sweetness: You can easily adjust the sweetness by adding more or less brown sugar depending on how tart your apples are.

  • Make it warmer: Add a pinch of nutmeg, allspice, or even apple pie spice to give it that bakery-style aroma.

  • Shortcut option: No shame in using canned apple pie filling if you’re short on time. Just warm it up and spoon it over the cream cheese layer.

  • For dipping: Graham crackers are classic, but vanilla wafers, pretzels, or shortbread cookies all work beautifully.

Serving Ideas

  • For parties: Serve it in a pretty pie dish or trifle bowl and surround it with dippers. think graham crackers, pretzels, shortbread cookies, or apple slices.

  • For holidays: Add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar or a drizzle of caramel sauce on top to make it extra festive. It fits right in at Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any fall gathering.

  • For dessert boards: Spoon the dip into a small bowl as the centerpiece and arrange mini cookies, fruit, and even chocolate squares around it for a dessert-grazing board moment.

  • For a cozy night in: Warm up the apple topping slightly before serving and pair with cinnamon-sugar pita chips for a low-effort treat that feels indulgent.

Variations To Try

This dip is delicious as-is, but it’s also one of those recipes you can dress up a dozen different ways depending on the occasion or what you fancy at the time. Here are a few ideas to think about:

  • Caramel Apple Pie Dip: Drizzle warm caramel sauce over the apple layer and top with a sprinkle of sea salt for a sweet-salty twist.

  • Crumble Topping: Add a layer of crushed graham crackers or baked streusel on top of the apples for that “apple crisp” feel without turning on the oven.

  • Nutty Crunch: Mix chopped pecans or walnuts into the apple topping for a bit of crunch and extra fall flavor.

  • Apple Pie Cheesecake Cups: Layer the dip into small mason jars or dessert cups and top with whipped cream for an adorable single-serve dessert.

  • Spiced Pear Version: Swap the apples for diced pears and add a pinch of nutmeg. Perfect for late fall or winter gatherings.

  • Cinnamon Roll Style: Stir a little cinnamon into the cream cheese layer and drizzle icing over the top. It’s pure comfort food magic.
