Homemade Fajita Seasoning
Let me show you how to make your own DIY fajita seasoning mix! Listen, if you’re a regular reader then you’ll know that I definitely don’t shy away from a kitchen shortcut here and there. I know how tricky it can be sometimes to get dinner on the table night after night, but this homemade fajita seasoning mix is one of those simple wins that takes almost no effort.
It comes together in literally 2 minutes, and chances are you already have everything you need sitting in your pantry. Once you try it, you might just skip the store-bought packets for good. It’s so much more flavorsome, and of course there’s the added benefit that you know exactly what’s in it.
If you’ve tried and loved my DIY Tajin inspired chili lime seasoning (so good for margaritas!!) then this one should be next on on your list!

Ingredients
- Chili powder: This is where the magic starts—chili powder brings a warm, earthy base with just the right amount of kick. Not super spicy, just flavorful.
- Smoked paprika: Adds that smoky depth that makes your fajitas taste like they came off a sizzling grill—even if you cooked them in a skillet on a Tuesday. You can sub for standard paprika if you prefer, though I recommend smoked.
- Cumin: Warm and nutty, cumin is the backbone of any good Tex-Mex blend. Don’t skip it—it’s the secret to that classic fajita flavor.
- Granulated garlic: For that punchy, savory flavor that makes everything taste better. Granulated works better than powder here because it blends more evenly with the other spices.
- Salt: A very fine sea salt is my go-to. Avoid a course salt as it can knock off the texture and it won’t fully blend with the other ingredients.

How To Make Fajita Seasoning Mix
As always, I’ve included a printable recipe card for you at the bottom of this post! Feel free to print it out and save it for when you’re ready to cook.
- Add all the spices to a small bowl and give them a good stir until everything’s evenly mixed—no clumps or streaks.

- Transfer to a sealed jar or airtight container and stash it in your pantry. It’ll stay fresh and flavorful for about a month (if it lasts that long!).

Recipe Notes
-
Use good-quality spices – This blend is only as good as what you put in it. Cheap or stale spices can leave your seasoning tasting flat or weak. Look for fresh, high-quality chili powder, cumin, and smoked paprika for the boldest flavor.
-
Make it your own – Like things spicier? Add a pinch of cayenne. Want a little herby edge? A dash of dried oregano fits right in.
-
Double or triple the batch – This recipe makes enough for a few meals, but it’s easy to scale up if you want to have a jar ready to go for taco night, chili, or roasted veggies.
-
Storage tip – Keep your seasoning in an airtight jar or container in a cool, dry place. It’ll stay fresh for about a month, but chances are, you’ll use it up before then.
Serving Suggestions
-
Classic fajitas – Toss with sliced chicken, beef, or shrimp and sauté with bell peppers and onions for an easy weeknight win.
-
Veggie fajitas – This seasoning loves roasted mushrooms, zucchini, and onions just as much as it loves meat. Try it with a sheet pan full of veggies for a plant-based twist.
-
Taco upgrade – Sprinkle over ground beef or turkey for extra-flavorful tacos. Way better than the store-bought packet.
-
Roasted potatoes – Yep, it’s not just for fajitas. Toss baby potatoes or sweet potatoes with olive oil and a spoonful of this blend, then roast until crispy.
-
Rice bowls, eggs, or soups – A pinch of this seasoning adds smoky, savory depth to just about anything. Don’t be afraid to experiment.
How To Use As A Dry Rub Or Marinade
Rub it directly onto chicken, steak, or tofu with a little olive oil before grilling or roasting. Or stir a tablespoon into plain Greek yogurt or lime juice for a quick marinade that packs a punch.
