Homemade Tajin Chili Lime Seasoning

You know I’m all about the DIY spice blends—because when you make them yourself, you know exactly what’s going in, and you’ll never be caught empty-handed when the craving hits. This Tajin-inspired chili lime seasoning is one of my all-time favorites. It’s citrusy, salty, just the right amount of spicy, and ridiculously versatile. I love it for rimming margarita glasses (hello, spicy margs), but it’s also perfect sprinkled on fresh fruit, tossed over popcorn, stirred into dressings, or dusted over roasted veggies. Once you’ve got a jar of this on hand, you’ll find a hundred ways to use it.

Ingredients

  • True Lime crystals: You can substitute this for dried lime zest if you like, though I prefer using the crystals as they’re a finer consistency, so they blend into the mix better.
  • Salt: Stick with regular table salt here — coarse salt doesn’t mix in as evenly and has a habit of separating out from the rest of the blend.
  • Smoked paprika
  • Guajillo powder: You can swap this for chipotle powder — the flavor will be a little different, but it’s the closest match and still totally delicious.
  • White granulated sugar

Storage Tips

Here are a few quick storage tips to keep your homemade Tajin-style seasoning fresh and clump-free:

  • Keep it airtight: Store the seasoning in a tightly sealed spice jar or small container to prevent moisture from sneaking in.

  • Use a moisture packet: If you’ve got one of those little food-safe silica packets lying around, toss it into the jar—it’ll help keep the True Lime crystals from hardening up.

  • Don’t leave it out: Even a few hours uncovered can cause the mix to clump. Keep the lid on when not in use.

  • Cool, dry place only: Pantry or spice rack is perfect—just avoid anywhere humid.

How To Use Your Homemade Tajin Seasoning

Here are some of my favorite ways to use this homemade chili lime seasoning (besides just sneaking pinches of it from the jar):

  • Rim your cocktail glasses: This is hands-down my go-to use. Wet the rim of your glass with lime juice and dip it into the seasoning for the ultimate spicy-salty tang. It’s perfect for margaritas, micheladas, or even a bloody mary.

  • Sprinkle over fresh fruit: Mango, pineapple, watermelon, cucumber—anything juicy and sweet comes alive with a pinch of this stuff.

  • Toss with popcorn: Trust me, once you try it, regular popcorn won’t hit the same again. A little butter, a shake of this seasoning… next-level movie snack.

  • Add to roasted veggies: A quick sprinkle over roasted sweet potatoes, corn, or even zucchini adds a smoky, zesty punch.

  • Dust on chips or fries: Whether it’s tortilla chips, sweet potato fries, or even air fryer potato wedges—this seasoning is the move.

  • Boost your eggs or avocado toast: A pinch over scrambled eggs or smashed avo gives major flavor energy with zero effort.

It’s wildly versatile and honestly, you’ll probably find yourself using it on things you didn’t even expect.
