Drizzle To Sizzle: 12 Ways To Use Chili Oil To Fire Up Dinner Time

For those who crave the sizzle, simple heat just won’t do — they seek the scorching thrill of extreme spiciness. If you’re part of the fiery fellowship, chili oil should be your go-to condiment. This potent oil is infused with a mix of dried chilies, and often, for an added kick, it’s combined with the tingly sensation of Szechuan peppercorns, aromatic garlic, or zesty ginger.

You can, of course, make your own if you like, but you can pick up readymade jars of the good stuff for just a few quid in any Asian supermarket.

One of my favourite ways to enjoy chili oil – in particular the wonderfully crispy variety – is straight from the jar, on a big spoon, stood next to the fridge whilst I try to decide what’s for dinner that night.

But if you can exercise a bit more patience and restraint, you’ll find that it’s a beautifully versatile ingredient that can be used in pretty much any culinary scenario when you want to spice things up, or create a sizzling twist on any of the recipes in your regular rotation that you might be getting a bit bored of.

It’s an ingredient, a finishing touch, and a dipping delight all rolled into one.

Here are ten creative ways to incorporate chili oil into your dinner repertoire…

1. Drizzle Over Pizza: Swap out your regular chili flakes for a drizzle of chili oil on your next pizza night. The oil will add a smooth, spicy accent to each slice, complementing everything from classic pepperoni to a veggie supreme.

2. Amp Up Your Pasta: Give your pasta dishes a fiery twist by mixing in some chili oil. It pairs exceptionally well with aglio e olio, carbonara, and even seafood pastas, adding depth and a spicy warmth that tingles the palate. I also love this creamy chili oil pasta recipe – it takes just 25 minutes from start to finish, and it’s rich, flavoursome, and absolutely delicious.

3. Elevate Roasted Vegetables: Before roasting your favourite vegetables, toss them with a blend of chili oil and a pinch of sea salt. The heat will bring out the natural sweetness of the veggies, creating a caramelised, spicy crust. If you prefer to stir fry, these stir-fried greens with garlic and chili oil are always a winner.

4. Reinvent Your Soups and Stews: A few drops of chili oil can turn a comforting soup or stew into a flavour-packed bowl of delight. Drizzle it over creamy pumpkin soup, beef stew, or ramen for an instant upgrade. If you’re a big noodle fan like me, you’ll also love adding some of these delicious sides for ramen to round off the meal

6. Create a Dipping Sauce: Blend chili oil with soy sauce, vinegar, and a touch of honey to make a mouthwatering dipping sauce. It’s perfect for dumplings, spring rolls, or as a zingy accompaniment to a charcuterie board.

7. Transform Salad Dressings: Revitalise your salads by whisking chili oil into your dressings. Whether it’s a simple vinaigrette or a more complex Caesar, the addition of chili oil will add a surprising twist to your greens.

8. Top Off Your Tacos: Take taco night to the next level by finishing off your creations with a drizzle of chili oil. Whether it’s fish tacos, carne asada, or veggie-packed delights, the chili oil will add a satisfying heat.
