1. Chips

You can’t talk about what to serve with fish fingers without mentioning chips! It might make for a rather beige meal, but it’s simple comfort food at its finest, and it’s the kind of dinner you can put together without even really thinking about it.

Be sure to check out my Actifry chips recipe. They’re crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and so much healthier than their deep fried counterparts.

If you want to shake things up a little, you could try experimenting with different seasonings on your chips.

2. Baked beans

Fish fingers and baked beans is another combination that can’t be overlooked.

The tomatoey sauce is perfect for dipping morsels of coated white fish, and it’s a meal that you can have on the table in minutes.

Beans are also nutritional superstars, offering plenty of fibre and essential vitamins and minerals.

3. Mushy peas

Mushy peas go oh so well with fish, and you may be used to ordering a portion when you visit your favourite chippy.

I like to add plenty of vinegar when serving fish fingers with mushy peas, and a little sprinkling of sea salt!

4. Tartar sauce

Tartar sauce is super savoury and tangy, and it’s known as being the perfect condiment to serve alongside fish.

Whether you’re chucking some frozen fish fingers in the oven to make a quick sandwich, or making your own from scratch with the finest fish and freshly made breadcrumbs, a smother of tartar sauce can make all the difference to your meal.

5. Tomato ketchup

Everyone loves a dollop of tangy Tommy K!

It’ll add a splash of colour to your plate, and can transform a simple meal into something satisfying that ticks all your boxes.

6. Mashed potatoes

In the autumn and winter months, mashed potatoes are a tasty choice for what to serve with fish fingers.

Add a generous helping of butter or fresh cream to ensure your dish is super creamy, and sprinkle over some freshly chopped chives for presentation purposes.

7. Salad and a wrap

A fish finger wrap with plenty of lettuce, cucumber, and tomato is a popular choice on the lunchtime menus of gastropubs, though it would be just as good served as your own kitchen table!

Add a side dish of some crisps and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, and you’re good to go.

Remember to add a little tartar sauce to really make the flavours sing.

8. Bean salad

Beans are quick, cheap, and mega nutritious, and they make a wonderful salad that can be a healthy side dish for finger fingers.

Pick your favourite tinned beans, mix together in a large bowl, and add a simple olive oil or lemon based dressing. Finish by adding some freshly chopped coriander leaves.

9. Crusty French bread

A fish finger sandwich can be a real joy, and it’s likely that you’re most accustomed to a couple of slices of white.

A fish finger baguette though is so good, and it makes a filling meal that will definitely please even the biggest of appetites. Serve the crusty bread fresh from the oven if you can, and add some tartar sauce and salad leaves.

10. Creamy coleslaw

A crunchy, creamy coleslaw is the ideal accompaniment to fish fingers, and if you make your own version, you can make it as healthy as you like.

Chop up veggies such as red and white cabbage, onion, and carrot, add a grated apple, and make a dressing using low fat natural yoghurt. Serve with a chunk of lemon and sprinkle over freshly chopped herbs, such as coriander or parsley.

11. Vegetable rice

Veggie rice is a wonderful way to use up any leftovers you have in the fridge, including carrots, peppers, mushrooms, sweetcorn, and peas.

It’s also quick and easy to make, making it a good choice for what to serve with fish fingers on a busy weeknight when you don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen.

This homemade vegetable rice recipe is one of my favourites, and I love the crunchy addition of the chopped peanuts!

12. Peas and sweetcorn

Sometimes, the simplest choices really are the best.

Peas and sweetcorn will ensure you’re getting a couple of generous portions of your 5-a-day, add a splash of colour to your plate, and take hardly any time at all to prepare.

13. Potato waffles

Fancy a carbohydrate based side dish, but bored of chips?

Potato waffles could be a tasty choice here! You can make your own, or buy them ready from the oven from the supermarket. I really like a sweet potato version, served with fish fingers and a colourful side salad.

14. Spaghetti hoops

Fish fingers, spaghetti hoops, and fries is the kind of quick and easy meal that your family will request time and time again.

Spaghetti hoops are wonderfully retro, and they’re also naturally low in fat and sugar, enriched with iron, and count towards your 5-a-day.

A runny fried egg is perfect for dipping fish fingers!

To make a satisfying evening meal, add salad and fries too.

16. Potato salad

A potato salad is such a lovely side dish for fish fingers, particularly in the warmer summer months. You can serve it warm, or if you’re trying to prep dishes in advance to save a little time, you can just make it the night before and keep it in the fridge.

I really enjoy making a potato salad by mixing mayo and horseradish sauce to make a dressing, and then adding chopped red onion and chives for decoration.

17. Nando’s style peas

If you enjoy food with a bit of a spicy kick, you really need to try Nando’s style peas!

I make this simple side dish for fish fingers by boiling some frozen peas, and mashing gently whilst adding a little butter, fresh mint, and red chilli.

It’s super simple but makes a serving of peas so much more interesting, and creates a sophisticated dish that wouldn’t be out of place at a dinner party when served alongside some homemade fish fingers.
