What To Serve With Sausage Rolls
Whether you’re preparing a family picnic, a celebratory buffet, or just a quick and easy lunch to get you through the working day, you might be wondering what to serve with sausage rolls.
The humble sausage roll is something that many of us eat regularly, but choosing the right side dishes can really elevate your pastry based delight and make it into something a little more impressive.
Let’s take a look at the best options…

1. Watercress salad
A sausage roll can seem like quite the indulgence.
The butter filled pastry and the somewhat fatty sausage meat make for a rather rich bite, so sometimes it makes sense to choose a light and refreshing side dish that can act as something as a palate cleanser.
This is why a watercress based green salad, with a light lemony dressing, can make the perfect side dish.
Your salad can of course be as simple or as complex as you like, so if you’re serving up sausage rolls on a regular basis, you might want to do a little experimentation.
Fruits lend themselves particularly well to being teamed with the peppery taste of watercress, so you might like to add some chunks of orange or a small handful of plump blueberries.

2. Tomato chutney
A sausage roll with a tomato chutney is traditional British fare that would work well for any picnic or garden get-together.
You can pick up plenty of options in the supermarket, but if you have the time available, it’s always worth making your own.
You can make this easy tomato chutney recipe in less than an hour, and you’ll only need five ingredients.

3. Apple salad
You don’t need to be a gourmet chef to know that pork and apple is a match made in culinary heaven!
The sweetness of the apple can really lift the pork, and create a balanced dish that ticks all the flavour boxes.
Keep things simple and allow your sausage roll to maintain its place as star of the show by combining chunks of apple with spinach or rocket, and using a light lemon vinaigrette.
If you like, you can add some chunks of cheddar cheese and some walnuts.

4. Mustard
Mustard is the grown up, no-nonsense accompaniment to a sausage roll.
There are no rules here, so you can choose French, English, or wholegrain.
It’s all down to your personal preference!
(You’ll also like side dishes for little smokies).

5. Potato salad
Adding a portion of carbohydrates to your sausage roll can transform it from being an on-to-go snack into a satisfying meal.
A potato salad can be served hot or cold, which makes it ideal for serving at a picnic or buffet, or even taking into work in a lunchbox.
To elevate your potato salad to the next level, add some chopped red onion and decorate with freshly snipped chives.
I personally like to add a little horseradish, too. It gives it an extra depth of flavour, and a nice little kick!

6. Red cabbage
Red cabbage is another light option for what to serve with sausage rolls, and is a good choice for summery gatherings.
Red cabbage with apples would be a fantastic option, and will really complement the flavour of the pork.
If you’re prefer though, you can keep things super simple by finely slicing your cabbage and drizzling with your favourite salad dressing.
Add a few fresh sprigs of parsley or coriander to round things off.

7. Baked beans
Baked beans and a sausage roll might be old school, but some combinations were built to last!
This is the kind of meal that you can have on the table in hardly any time at all, making it a really great midweek supper for the whole family.
If you want to push the boat out a little though, that’s also an option. You can get a bit more advanced than just cracking open a tin from the cupboard and whacking the contents into the microwave!
Making your own baked beans is really straightforward, and you can get creative by adding your favourite seasonings, spices, or even chunks of bacon.

8. Chips
When it comes to what to serve with sausage rolls, chips are a worthy contender that definitely deserve a mention!
Ditch the supermarket varieties that are all too often dry and uninspiring, and make your own instead.
I prefer to ditch the deep fat fryer and instead create perfectly crispy yet fluffy chips in my Actifry.
My homemade chips recipe is quick and easy, and it’s best served with lashings of salt and vinegar!

9. Cold cuts and cheeses
A sausage roll is a fantastic part of any ploughman’s platter.
Serve up cold cuts of your favourite meats, cheese, chutney, olives, and a chilled glass of your favourite white wine.
To add an element of freshness, serve with a green side salad and some fruity chutneys.
This kind of set up is so versatile, and is equally good when served for a celebration with friends as it is in front of the TV on the evenings when you’re not in the mood for cooking!
