One of the real beauties of following the Slimming World plan is that no foods are off limits.

If you’ve ever been on a diet that bans carbs, only allows you to eat at certain times, or sees you living on lettuce, then you’ll know that extreme approaches are very rarely sustainable in the longer term.

So if you love good old fashioned comfort food and real pastry, you’ll be delighted to know that these Slimming World cheese and onion rolls can definitely feature on the menu!

Though there are tons of popular substitutes to pastry, such as sandwich thins and tortilla wraps, there are times when only the real thing will do.

By using lighter pastry and a slimming friendly centre, it’s very possible to enjoy this recipe whilst sticking to your plan.

Here’s everything you need to know…

How many calories are in this recipe?

There are approximately 280 calories in one cheese and onion roll, when made as per the instructions here.

But what does this mean exactly, in terms of your weight loss goals?

Well, the average man needs to consume around 2,500 calories a day in order to maintain a healthy body weight.

For the average woman, it’s around 2,000 calories a day.

If you’re aiming to lose weight, you’ll want to consume less than this to ensure that you’re in a calorie deficit and help you to reach your goals!

When you do the calculations, you can see that it’s very possible to eat these cheese and onion rolls as part of a calorie controlled diet.

Syns are trademarked by Slimming World, and values are only available to current paying members.

As such, I have decided to omit Syn values from my recipes moving forward.

Rest assured though, the recipes here will always be made to be as slimming friendly as possible.

Refer to the official Slimming World app to calculate the Syns, or speak with your consultant for further guidance and advice.

How to serve your cheese and onion rolls

I love serving these rolls for lunch or dinner with a serving of homemade chips, and some baked beans.

To ensure that you’re also getting your recommended serving of speed food, add a side salad or your favourite vegetables as a side dish.

Tips and advice for making the best slimming friendly cheese and onion rolls

  • Use a reduced fat cheese to keep the calorie and Syn count a little lower. Sometimes, lower fat cheeses don’t melt as well as their full fat counterparts, but I’ve found that when added to potato and other ingredients like we do here, you’ll still get good results
  • Make life easier for yourself by picking up a ready rolled light puff pastry at the supermarket. I use Jus-Rol, though most stores will do their own brand version. Just make sure that you double check the nutritional values
  • Working with pastry can be tricky, but don’t let that put you off! Just make sure that you’re working on a cold surface, and only handle the pastry as much as is necessary

Slimming World Cheese & Onion Rolls

Perfect for lunch with chips, beans, and salad, these slimming sausage rolls are made with real puff pastry!
Prep Time10 minutes
Cook Time25 minutes
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: British
Servings: 2
Calories: 280kcal

Ingredients

  • 70 grams light, ready rolled puff pastry
  • 40 grams reduced fat cheddar grated
  • 1/2 onion finely diced
  • 1 large potato peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 dash Worcester sauce
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 pinch mustard powder
  • 1 grind fresh black pepper
  • Low calorie cooking spray

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 200 degrees.
  • Boil the potatoes in a pan of boiling water for 10 minutes, or until tender. Remove from heat and drain.
  • Put the potatoes in a bowl and add the cheese, onion, mustard powder, Worcester sauce, and black pepper. Mash together well.
  • Make two equal sized rectangles from your puff pastry, and lay on a cold, flat surface.
  • Place half of the cheese and onion filling on one side of each pastry rectangle, and brush one edge with beaten egg. Gently fold both in half to form your rolls, so the egg acts as a seal. Crimp the open edge with a folk, gently add some slits with a knife and brush with beaten egg.
  • Spritz a baking tray with low calorie cooking spray (to prevent sticking), and place your rolls on the tray. You might find it useful to use a pallet knife to do this.
  • Bake in the oven for 15 minutes, or until your sausage rolls are piping hot and golden brown. Keep an eye on them so they don't burn!
  • Serve and enjoy!
