17 Family-Style Dinners Where Everyone Builds Their Own Plate
So I want to talk to you about a new-to-me style of dining that I’ve been leaning into a lot with my family recently, and it’s totally changed the game for stress-free dinnertimes! Family-style dinners are exactly what they sound like. Everything gets set out in the middle of the table, and everyone helps themselves. No plated meals, no back-and-forth from the kitchen, just a relaxed, serve-yourself setup that takes the pressure off.
It’s one of my favourite ways to do dinner right now, especially with a family. It makes things easier to prep, easier to serve, and so much more flexible. If you’ve got fussy eaters (or just people who all want something slightly different), this kind of setup is a gamechanger. Everyone can build their plate the way they like, and suddenly dinner feels a lot less stressful.
It also just feels nicer. A bit more relaxed, a bit more connected, and a lot more enjoyable. I know that for many people this isn’t anything revolutionary, but if you haven’t really leaned into it, I really urge you to give it a try.
My Best Tips for Family-Style Dinners
1. Build Around One Main, Then Add Options
Start with one main dish—something hearty and easy to serve—then surround it with a few simple sides or toppings.
Think:
- Tacos + toppings
- Curry + rice + naan
- Pulled meat + bowls or wraps
You don’t need lots of components, just enough to give people a bit of choice.
2. Keep Everything Serve-Ready
The goal is to avoid getting up and down once you sit down.
Use:
- Big serving bowls
- Platters
- Boards
If everything’s already on the table, dinner runs itself.
3. Think “Build Your Own”
This is where family-style dinners really shine.
Meals that work best include:
- Tacos
- Bowls
- Nachos
- Wraps
Everyone gets to put together something they actually want to eat, which makes life much easier, especially with kids.
4. Let Your Slow Cooker Do the Work
Regular readers know just how much I love my slow cooker, so of course it’s getting a mention here. Slow cooker meals are perfect for family-style dinners. You can cook everything ahead of time, keep it warm, and bring the whole pot straight to the table.
5. Add Easy Extras (Without Overthinking It)
You don’t need complicated sides. A few simple additions go a long way:
- A quick salad
- Some bread or rice
- Store-bought dips or sauces
These little extras make the table feel full and abundant without adding much work.
6. Don’t Worry About It Looking Perfect
Family-style dinners aren’t about presentation, they’re about ease.
A big dish in the middle, a few bowls around it, and you’re done. It should feel relaxed and a little bit informal.
7. Make It Work for You
The best part about this way of eating is how adaptable it is. Use what you have, keep it simple, and don’t overcomplicate things.
Once you start doing this regularly, it becomes second nature, and you’ll wonder why you ever did dinner any other way!
Now I’m going to share with you some of my favorite meals for this kind of dining…
Slow Cooker Barbacoa Beef Tacos

These barbacoa beef tacos are perfect for a family-style setup. The tender, flavour-packed beef can go straight in the middle of the table, with tortillas and a spread of toppings so everyone can build their own just how they like. It’s easy, low-effort, and makes dinner feel a little more fun, so ideal for feeding a crowd without any fuss.
Sloppy Joe Nachos

These nachos always feel like a fun option! Pile them onto a big tray and set them in the middle of the table with extras like sour cream, jalapeños, and guacamole so everyone can load up their own plate. They’re messy in the best way and perfect for a relaxed, help-yourself kind of dinner.
Build-Your-Own Hot Dogs With Chili

Build-your-own hot dogs with chili are such a fun, low-effort dinner, especially if you’ve got kids at the table. Set out the hot dogs, buns, and a pot of chili, then add a few toppings like cheese, onions, and maybe even some crispy bacon, and let everyone create their own.
Honey Chipotle Chicken Wings

Slow Cooker Beef & Broccoli

Perfect for a takeout-style dinner at home! Set the beef in the middle of the table with bowls of rice or noodles on the side, and let everyone build their own plate just how they like. Feels a little like a Friday night treat, but without leaving the house.
Whole Roast Chicken

A whole roasted chicken just feels right any time of year. Set it in the middle of the table and let everyone carve off what they like, with fresh salads in the summer or roasted veg and potatoes in the winter. It makes a real centerpiece, and it’s perfect for bringing everyone together without a lot of fuss.
Slow Cooker Chicken Fajitas

Slow cooker chicken fajitas are made for family-style dinners. The tender chicken and peppers can be set right in the middle of the table alongside warm tortillas and all your favourite toppings, so everyone can build their own.
There’s something about putting everything in the middle of the table that just changes the feel of dinner. It’s more relaxed, a little less structured, and somehow more enjoyable for everyone.
These are the kinds of meals that don’t require perfect timing or plating. They’re meant to be shared, passed around, and pieced together as you go. Whether it’s a busy weeknight or a slower evening where you can linger a bit longer, having a few go-to family-style dinners makes everything feel easier.
Pick one that fits what you’ve got on hand, set it out, and let dinner take care of itself. I’d really love to hear about what you choose to make and how it works out for your family!
