Sausage casserole is such a comforting meal, and it has the added benefit of being really easy to prepare! Most recipes will just require putting your ingredients in a roasting tray and popping in the oven, then less than an hour later you’ll have a hot and wholesome meal that everyone will enjoy.

If it’s on your meal plan for this week and you’re looking for inspiration for what to serve with sausage casserole, I want to help.

I serve up this dish at least a few times a month, I’ve tried many different accompaniments over the years, and I’ve discovered the ones that really work the best!

Here are the top ideas that you can choose from…

1. Wholegrain mustard mash

Sausage and mash is a classic combination, and it should be a culinary crime to serve a casserole without a portion of fluffy potato goodness!

If you want to shake things up a little and bring some added variety, stir a generous dollop of wholegrain mustard to your mashed potato. It adds a little kick of heat, as well as a pleasant texture.

Alternatively, you can try garlic mash. Roast a bulb in the oven with some oil, then chop a few cloves and stir through your potato with plenty of butter.

2. Jacket potato

A jacket potato is a convenient choice for what to serve with sausage casserole when you’re short on time and you need a side dish that can be ready and on the table without any fuss.

I like to cook mine in the microwave for around 5-8 minutes or until cooked through, then spritz with low calorie cooking spray, season with salt and pepper, and bake in the oven until golden brown and crispy. This saves a lot of cooking time and the result is a beautifully fluffy potato.

3. Cauliflower cheese

Cauliflower cheese always feels like a really indulgent side dish, and you can’t beat that molten hot, bubbly cheese alongside bitesized morsels of perfectly cooked cauliflower!

I like to add chunks of bacon, and a sprinkle of dried red chilli flakes. If you want to get creative, you could even add macaroni pasta shapes.

4. White rice

You really can’t go wrong with rice as a side dish for sausage casserole.

It’s budget friendly, most of us have a bag in the kitchen cupboard, and it takes just ten minutes or so to prepare. It’s also brilliant for soaking up all those tasty juices!

5. Yorkshire puddings

A Yorkshire pudding is made from a batter consisting of eggs, flour, and milk, and they’re absolutely delicious when they’re served with a casserole.

You can even make a giant sized one, and serve your casserole inside it, with your favourite green vegetables! This is a popular menu choice in lots of traditional British pubs and bistros.

You can buy Yorkshire puddings readymade in many supermarkets, but if you have a little extra time available, it’s well worth making your own.

6. Roasted green beans

Roasting green beans is a wonderful way to ensure that you lock in all the goodness, without running the risk of turning them into a soggy mess!

Simply wash your beans and pat dry with a kitchen towel, and spread out over a baking tray. Drizzle with oil and season with plenty of salt and pepper, and roast in the oven for around 15 minutes.

The result is a side dish that’s more sophisticated than its boiled counterpart, but it’s just as easy to prepare.

7. Garlic bread

Garlic bread is another side dish option that’s big on flavour and texture, but is really easy to prepare.

I like to choose a baguette variety, as it holds up well to dipping into the casserole, and can be used to scoop up the juices that are left on the plate once everyone has finished their meal.

You’ll be pleased to discover that making your own creates way better results than anything you might pick up from a takeaway, and it takes hardly any effort at all.

8. Steamed green cabbage

It’s always a good idea to encourage your family to eat their greens! When it comes to what to serve with sausage casserole, it makes sense to have a nutritious side dish of green vegetables.

Streaming is a great way to gently cook cabbage whilst retaining the vitamins and minerals, and it has the added benefit of not creating that unpleasant smell that you’ll sometimes find when you boil cabbage!
