With chunks of succulent steak encased in light and crisp pastry, a good steak pie is comfort food at its very best. To make a meal to remember though, you’ll need to take some time to plan what to serve with steak pie, so you’re selecting the tastiest side dishes for your occasion.

From delicately prepared vegetables, to hearty potato recipes, there’s something for everyone to choose from.

1. Homemade chunky chips

Steak pie and chunky chips might seem like the simplest of combinations, but it’s also one of the best that you’ll ever come across!

It’s definitely worth taking the time to prepare your own chips from scratch, so you get the very best results.

My best piece of advice is to experiment with different seasoning mixes to find something that you really love… I personally like to add plenty of ground garlic and paprika to my chips whilst they’re cooking, for that beautiful golden colour and extra flavour!

2. Lashings of rich beef gravy

A steak pie will usually have some gravy inside already, but I always like to put a big boat of extra rich beef gravy in the middle of the table so everyone can help themselves to a little extra.

This is especially important if you’re serving potatoes and veggies, and you’ll want to make sure that things don’t become too dry!

For extra richness, add some red wine during the cooking process.

3. Wholegrain mustard mash

Wholegrain mustard mash is ideal when it comes to what to serve with steak pie, and it’s surprisingly easy to make.

Boil Maris Piper potatoes until cooked through, then mash and add a some double cream or butter, and some wholegrain mustard. A little tends to go a long way thanks to the strong flavour, so just add a small amount to begin with, taste, and then add more if you desire.

4. Cauliflower cheese

Cauliflower cheese is a quintessentially British dish, and it’s one that’s extremely versatile. It can be served as a main course, as a side, for lunch or for dinner, and if you want to shake things up a little bit you can even add extra ingredients such as broccoli and crispy bacon!

For serving with steak pie, I like to keep things simple though, and I highly recommend this cauliflower cheese recipe

Within an hour, it’ll be bubbly, golden, and have your kitchen smelling like absolute heaven!

It’s definitely not the most waistline friendly of side dishes, and of course it’s not the kind of thing that you’d serve up every day, but as an occasional indulgent treat, it’s something that you’ll want to return to again and again.

5. Oxo roast potatoes

Everyone has their personal favourite recipe for the very best roasties, and over the years I’ve come across secret ingredients ranging from duck fat, to polenta, and everything in between!

In my kitchen, the secret addition is always a crumbled beef stock cube.

Parboiled in Oxo, then roughly shaken in a sieve to create those to-die-for crispy bits, before finally finishing in the air fryer, these Oxo roast potatoes are a delicious side dish for steak pie.

6. Jersey Royals with herby butter

If you’ve never tried Jersey Royals before, you’re in for a real treat.

They’re new potatoes that are exclusively grown on the island of Jersey, and they’re known for their distinctive flavour. They’re nutty, earthy, and sweet, and have a creamy but firm texture.

Jersey Royals are typically available in supermarkets from March until July, and they’re well worth taking advantage of during that window!

For best results, steam and serve with some salted, herby butter. They’re a great option for what to serve with steak pie when you want a carbohydrate based dish, but you don’t want to go with anything that could be too filling.

7. Creamed leeks

Green vegetables are always a good choice for what to serve with steak pie.

Creamed leeks are so delicious, and when preparing as a side for a special meal, I like to add some bacon and cheese!

Here’s the method I follow…

8. Roasted purple sprouting broccoli

This colourful cousin of broccoli is leafy, deep in colour, and can add a satisfying crunch to your meal.

It can be prepared in a whole host of different ways, but I always find that roasting it in some vegetable oil, with some whole garlic cloves, produces the best results.

9. Smashed sprouts with chestnuts

If you think that sprouts are just for Christmas, think again!

They’re a great dish when you’re planning what to serve with steak pie at any time of the year.

Smashed sprouts with chestnuts takes less than 20 minutes to prepare and cook, and it can be a great way to encourage your family to try different foods.

10. Honey roast parsnips

Parsnips are rich in potassium, fibre, and vitamin C, and they can also be so tasty when they’re carefully prepared to serve alongside your pie.

This is my favourite way to cook them…

12. Mushy peas

Steak pie and mushy peas is the kind of offering that you’d find served up from an outdoor food truck at a football match, or in an old fashioned recipe book that celebrates some of the popular choices or eras gone by.

Sometimes though, these simple dishes really are the best.
