Mince Pies | Slimming Friendly
These Slimming World mince pies offer the best of both worlds over the festive season…
With just 1.5 Syns or 52 calories each, they can very easily be worked into most diets and healthy eating plans, but at the same time, they’re not sacrificing anything when it comes to that taste and texture that we all love.
Sometimes, making a substitute for real pastry is worth it.
But in this instance, come on.
It’s Christmas, these are mince pies, and you can’t beat a bit of the real thing.
If you want to create some slimming friendly snacks, impress your fellow slimmers at a taster night, or just want to enjoy a mince pie without any of the guilt, these are for you!
For the full ingredients list and detailed instructions, see the recipe card at the end of this post. Make sure you check out this important information first though…
How many calories are in this recipe?
There are just 52 calories per mince pie.
For reference, an average man needs to consume around 2,500 calories a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, it’s around 2,000 calories a day.
Of course, if you’re aiming to lose weight, you’ll want to consume less than this to reach your goals!
For more information on calories, visit the NHS website.
And how many Syns?
If we’re getting really accurate here, there are 1.3 Syns in each of these Slimming World mince pies.
When counting Syns, I like to round them up to 1.5 Syns each!
Considering that many shop bought mince pies can cost you in excess of 10 Syns, that’s a pretty decent saving.
Baking with filo pastry
Filo pastry is wonderfully crispy and light, and it also has significantly less Syns and calories than many other types of pastry.
Thanks to its texture, we need just 5 grams of pastry per mince pie, which is equal to three squares of approximately 2.5″ each.
Though you could decide to make your own, I prefer to use shop bought. It’s much quicker and easier, and I think it’s wise to leave the pastry making to the experts!
Here are some extra tips to keep in mind when making these mince pies with filo pastry…
- You need to work quickly to ensure the pastry doesn’t dry out. If you want to take your time, cover the filo with a clean, damp tea towel when not working with it.
- If you have any unused sheets, wrap them well in cling film and refrigerate for up to two weeks.
- Don’t panic about getting everything just perfect! Filo is forgiving in the sense that it looks lovely and rustic, so you don’t have to worry about precise edges.
Specialist equipment you need to make these Slimming World mince pies
You’ll need a mini muffin/cupcake tray for this recipe.
One like this, from Amazon, will do the job perfectly…
If you only have a larger muffin tray, then you can simply make bigger mince pies. Just make sure that you recalculate your Syns and calories, if you’re serious about sticking to your plan.
A pastry brush will also come in handy here for brushing the layers of filo.
Again, this option from Amazon will do the trick…

Christmas Mince Pies
Ingredients
- 40 grams ready made filo pastry sheets
- 12 tsp mincemeat
- 1 egg beaten
- Low calorie cooking spray
- Icing sugar for decorating, optional
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 180 degrees.
- Spritz the holes of your mini muffin/cupcake tray with low calorie cooking spray.
- Cut the pastry into squares of approximately 2.5".
- Arrange a square of pastry into one of the baking tray holes, gently pushing down so it forms your tart shape. Brush with a little beaten egg. Add your next square on top, again pushing down to keep the shape. Brush with a little beaten egg again, and then place the third and final sheet on top and brush with the beaten egg. Repeat this process so you have 12 completed tart cases. Remember that you want them to look nice and rustic, so the sheets shouldn't be placed directly on top of each other.

- Bake in the oven until starting to turn brown and crispy.

- Remove from the oven and carefully add a teaspoon of mincemeat into each case.
- Return to the oven and bake for a further 5 minutes to heat through the mincemeat, keeping a close eye on them so they don't burn.

- Serve warm, dredged with a little icing sugar, and enjoy!
