Searching for a little inspiration for the best potato side dishes for steak? I’ve got you covered!

Steak is without a doubt my all-time favourite meal, and though I like to make sure the meat itself is the star of the show, I love experimenting with different side dishes that will perfectly complement my sirloin, rump, or fillet.

Everyone knows that chips or a jacket potato are delicious with steak, but there are so many different options out there to choose from.

Ready to get a bit more experimental in the kitchen?

Let’s have a look at the best potato side dishes for steak…

1. Marmite roast potatoes

These Marmite roast potatoes are a match made in heaven for steak. They’re easy to make, and the result is fluffy roasties with plenty of rich and golden crispy bits.

Add your favourite sauce for dipping, a green side salad, and you’ve got a meal that’s worthy of being served in an upmarket steak house.

Got some Marmite haters in the family?

I urge you to give these a try anyway!

You can use less Marmite than recommended if you’d like, though it’s worth noting that many people would never realise that this is the secret ingredient.

The rich savoury taste is one that everyone will surely love.

2. Greek style crispy smashed potatoes with lemon and feta

When serving steak during the summer months, I love to make a batch of these crispy smashed Greek potatoes

They’re reminiscent of the kind of side dish that you’d find in a typically Mediterranean taverna, and if you love Greek flavours then I promise that you’ll savour every bite!

3. Bombay potato salad

I love a good potato salad, and I love experimenting with different flavour combinations to bring something fresh and exciting to the dining table now and again.

A basic mayonnaise dressing works fine, but with a little imagination, you can have something a bit more special!

If you’re looking for the best potato side dishes for steak, I highly recommend trying this Indian inspired Bombay potato salad.

It has a wonderful depth of flavour, and it’s the perfect side dish for steak, alongside a light green salad.

4. Mustard mashed potatoes

Steak and mustard are a powerhouse partnership, but you don’t have to just put a little mustard on the side of your plate for dipping.

Take things up a level by making mustard mash.

Wholegrain mustard works best for this, and it couldn’t be easier.

Just prepare your mashed potatoes as you usually would (I love lashings of butter and a splash of milk for extra creaminess!), and add a dollop of mustard to stir through at the end.

Taste, and add a little more if desired.

5. Herb and garlic hasselback sweet potatoes

Hasselback potatoes turn the humble potato into something extra special!

They’re made by slicing thin, even layers into a baking potato, and because extra surface area is created, there’s a bigger blank canvas for adding flavour.

Try this herb and garlic hasselback recipe, which uses sweet potatoes. If you’d like a little extra decadence, add sour cream and goats cheese before serving with your steak.

6. Parmesan truffle French fries

Steak and fries is another classic combination that can’t be overlooked. If you want to impress, upgrade to parmesan truffle fries

They’re fluffy, crispy, earthy, oh so moreish, and just as good as anything you’d find in a high end steak restaurant.

Use natural truffle oil if you can find it, to avoid the synthetic taste you sometimes find in more processed varieties.

7. Crinkle cut chips

Okay, so they may technically not taste any different to your bog standard chips, but there’s just something so fun about crinkle cuts!

You can pick up a crinkle slicer from most kitchenware stores for just a few pounds, and it’ll definitely make you fall in love with homemade chips all over again.

For the ultimate crinkle cut chips, I cook mine in my Tefal Actifry with a generous drizzle of vegetable oil for around 30 minutes.

Serve with plenty of salt and vinegar as a super tasty side dish for steak.
